Big Bear Lake truly shines in the summer – I know most people rave about the skiing – but really, our family enjoys all the fun summer activities in the mountains. Here is a sample of what you can do:
Hiking and Mountain Biking: Explore the San Bernardino National Forest with numerous trails catering to all skill levels. The most popular trails are Castle Rock Trail, Cougar Crest Trail, and the paved Alpine Pedal Path. Make sure to get their early if you want parking! If you want to do a bit more – the infamous PCT passes through Big Bear and there are multiple spots where you can connect to the trail.
Off-roading: This is by far our favorite thing to do. There are so many trails to take your off-road vehicle. If you really want to get after it make sure to check out Holcomb Creek, John Bull and Gold Mountain – all of which are Jeep Badge of Honor trails.
Water Sports: Cool off in Big Bear Lake with swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skiing. Several rental shops around the lake offer equipment and lessons. A top favorite of the family is kayaking in Bolder Bay. Its the most scenic and calm around the lake.
Fishing: Cast a line and try your luck at catching trout, bass, and catfish. A California fishing license is required.
Boating: Rent a pontoon boat, fishing boat, or speedboat for a fun day on the water. Guided tours are also available. Pontoons are great for families, make sure to pack lots of snacks and sunscreen!
Ziplining: Soar through the trees on a thrilling zipline adventure at Action Zipline at Snow Valley.
Big Bear Village: Stroll through the charming Village, filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Catch a live performance at the outdoor Bartlett Park.
Big Bear Alpine Zoo: See rescued and rehabilitated animals native to the region, including bears, eagles, and mountain lions. A must do if you have little ones. When my kids were little they loved the Apline Zoo.
Gold Mining Adventures: Pan for gold and learn about the area's rich mining history. Another favorite when the kids were little – panning for gold is a great way to teach them history and keep them busy.
Scenic Sky Chair: Take a ride on the Scenic Sky Chair at Snow Summit for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains (summer operation).
Discovery Center: Learn about the natural history and ecology of the Big Bear area through exhibits and guided programs.
